So You Want to Make a Move Abroad?

No one is born in one place to stay there.

Avenida 9 de Julio, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

It doesn’t matter if you’re an experienced traveller or a novice, if you picked up and moved before or if you’re still dreaming of the first time to do so, stay engaged with those thoughts.

Travel, in all forms, does wonders for your mental and physical well-being. The ability to indulge in another culture, connect with people who have completely different stories from you, expand your mental horizons, as well as teach you about yourself, your own customs and cultures with which you were raised.

The age of technology in which we’re currently living has been both a blessing and a curse, however, for those of us who have it, we can maximize the blessings and continue to dream.

Use the time to research and learn more about the places that move you, the places that you can’t get out of your head, keep the fire burning (but don’t try to figure everything out, there’s beauty in unexpected discovery).

Maybe a few months ago you had thoughts about booking a trip for pleasure somewhere, enrolling in a study abroad program, or making a career move to another city or country somewhere else in the world.

The entire world has been effected, and it is clear more than ever how interconnected we are as a planet. Borders are still closed and governments around the world continue to take an incredibly inward approach.

We don’t know where things will head, how travel will be effected and how governments will react when this is all over, but as it always has throughout history, things will be okay. It won’t last forever.

This isn’t the first time in the history of humanity that we’ve faced a major crisis and it certainly won’t be the last.

Lago di Lugano, Lugano, Svizzera.

Don’t give up on your travel dreams, whatever they may be, or wherever they might take you. One way or another you’ll be able to fulfill your travel-related goals, it just may a take a bit more time than expected.

Patience has proven to be absolutely fundamental during this time, especially to our well-being. In the meantime, while we wait to reach the end of the tunnel, help yourself by diving into those travel plans you had: watch a film that is set in the area in which you’d like to be, listen to music that transports your mind to that place, engage in photos or virtual tours online.

Whatever you can do to keep the dream alive. You won’t be stuck where you are forever, that’s for sure.

For fear of the unknown people will try to dissuade you from pursuing your travel dreams. They may tell you stereotypes or try to argue for the ignorant bliss that comes with complacency: everyone has their own agenda.

Hey, your brain might even be telling you the same, as human beings we’re wired to look for solid ground and answers as a means of survival. But the power of new experiences, diverse cultural exposure, and foreign languages hitting your eardrums are much greater.

At the end of the day, the only person that knows what (and where) is right for you is yourself, find peace in your own thoughts and desires.

Piața Unirii, București, România.

Be proactive and keep working towards your travel goal. None of this has to stop just because times seem bleak and numerous questions have yet to be answered.

Take that trip. Embark on that Study Abroad program, fit it into your schedule and do it. Make that career move abroad you’ve always wanted to do, network, and find the path.

Things will be different on the other side but wanderlust never dies. Besides, the difficulty in going is always less than the difficulty in returning. Keep those dreams alive.

No one is born in one place to stay there.

So where are you headed next?
