On Change (Past and Future)

The circumstances of our lives are constantly evolving, constantly changing – no matter what we do to try to resist such change.

It’s natural for us, as human beings, to often feel adverse to change, to possess an innate fear of what’s to come, given that we have no idea what awaits us tomorrow.

But why do so many of us get caught in the loop? You know, depression about the past and anxiety about the future?

What’s done is done. It’s never coming back. The memories of which we possess are exactly that – memories. The past exists only in our minds. Human beings are too often weighed down by thoughts about events which have already seized to exist in reality.

It has become cliché to say “live for the present”, but if that’s all we truly have, why are we so quick to forget such simple information? We’re no longer who we were yesterday, nor will we be the same person tomorrow as we were today. And that’s fine, because this is what life is.

Tomorrow’s not guaranteed, for anyone. While the probability of us dying tomorrow is highly improbable, anything is possible. We can spiral out of control, focusing so much on the future, until that future ceases to exist forever. Why be so anxious?
